Ashe & Serana: playthrough guide

Start with the route that suits your playthrough. Detailed relationship guidance below contains spoilers.

Install the three parts

  1. Install compatible versions of SDA and Ashe, including their requirements.
  2. Install the separate Ashe & Serana Banter Patch after both mods.
  3. Follow the current patch listing for version and save-update instructions.

Do not use the legacy Slower or Much Slower Banter Cooldown files with 1.0.9 or later. The released patch introduced per-conversation cooldowns instead.

Start with Ashe

  1. Recruit Ashe at the Winking Skeever in Solitude.
  2. Play through Chapter 1, A Borrowed Soul.
  3. Start Dawnguard and recruit Serana.
  4. Continue either questline first, then finish the other.

Start with Serana

  1. Start Dawnguard and recruit Serana.
  2. Return her home and complete the early beats until she joins you again.
  3. Recruit Ashe and complete A Borrowed Soul.
  4. Continue whichever questline you prefer first, then complete the other.

The two starting routes offer different scripted banter and emotional pacing.

Relationship routes

Reveal relationship choices — story spoilers

The integration’s point-of-no-return choice occurs around Serana’s confession late in Dawnguard. Choose Ashe, Serana, or Fantasy Mode.

  • Ashe route: commit to Ashe; Serana remains a close friend.
  • Serana route: commit to Serana; Ashe remains a close friend.
  • Fantasy Mode: keep both relationships in a canon-adjacent option.

Fantasy Mode does not disable either mod’s later romance quests. The choice changes their shared awareness and banter. In the 1.0 release, monogamous routes have more of their duo material before the choice, while Fantasy Mode has more relationship-aware banter afterward.

What is coming in 1.1?

More travel, dungeon, combat and relationship conversations, plus shared quest awareness, are in development alongside Ashe 1.4. These are planned additions, not current public-release features.

If a conversation does not start

Check that both companions are present, your installed versions match the patch requirements, and you have reached the relevant story beat. Allow conversations to finish and cooldowns to pass. Do not install retired cooldown files to solve missing banter.
