Trying the SDA 4.4 Open Beta

Follow the current release installation guide for your platform and starting version. The 4.4 update is designed to work with existing saves; retain a backup before updating. Replace the old plugin and files when updating an earlier beta. Nexus currently provides the stable 4.3.2 release.

Do not remove SDA mid-playthrough to make a “clean save.” Quest state remains in the save. SDA is not suitable for ESL conversion.

Other mods that rewrite Serana’s dialogue or relationship systems can conflict with SDA. Check the current mod-page requirements and Patch Hub guide for the integrations in your load order.

Companion integrations differ: some are built in, while Ashe & Serana uses a separate banter patch. Consult the individual listing rather than installing every patch.

SDA 4.4 removed official SexLab and Flower Girls support. Unofficial patches are considered case by case; contact the mod author first. Use the current release instructions for supported animation integrations.

Getting to know Serana

Start Dawnguard early and spend time talking and adventuring together. Her friendship opens more conversations and follower features.

Feeding in 4.4

Blood-potion use and the new repeatable feeding interaction are different features. The latter requires the romance and its introductory conversation. See the 4.4 trigger guide for the exact requirements.

Companion features

See everyday features for outfits, training, sleeping, meals and more, or songs for her musical repertoire.

Dialogue, quests or outfits behaving unexpectedly?

Keep a safety save, reload, and check whether you can reproduce the issue. Note the exact objective or dialogue, SDA version, platform and relevant mods. Avoid skipping quest stages or removing mods from an ongoing save as a first troubleshooting step.

Crashes or stutter?

A symptom alone does not establish which mod caused it. Include a crash log where available and describe what happened immediately before the issue.

Send a report

Use the SDA feedback and bug report form. Include reproduction steps, load order, screenshots or video, and whether you updated an existing save. You can also ask in Discord. DMs can be sent to the mod author; do not post personal information publicly.

How the romance fits into Dawnguard:
The romance questline runs alongside Dawnguard’s main story, weaving new scenes into key beats so the relationship grows organically rather than dropping a single “love interest” moment. Once the romance arc concludes you gain short, repeat-ready scenes you can trigger at your leisure.

Why make Serana romanceable? SDA explores an optional romance built around patience, trust and Serana’s choices. This is the mod’s interpretation of her character, rather than a claim about Bethesda’s intended story.

Story-wise, Serana’s trauma doesn’t bar love; it just means the relationship needs patience, trust, and a rejection of the toxic rituals that harmed her. A healthy partnership lets her rewrite what family and intimacy can be.

Accessing the romance:

• Best-case: start a new game, meet Serana for the first time, and install SDA before entering Dimhollow. You’ll see every romance scene.

• Mid-Dawnguard install: you’ll catch all scenes tied to stages you haven’t reached yet.

• Post-Dawnguard install: you’ll miss most early quests but still unlock post-campaign conversations, plus marriage.
  
  

Opt-out and relationship rules:
At first meeting you can decline romance outright. Later you can switch to a platonic path. SDA checks that the Dragonborn is single (vanilla marriage system) before romance flags appear; other lovers from Amorous Adventures or Flower Girls aren’t counted.

Marriage without the temple:
Serana’s background makes a public Temple of Mara wedding unthinkable, so SDA offers a private elopement scene instead. The commitment is recognized by the game (and blocks future vanilla marriages) but skips the formal ceremony.

Animation support: Use the current Patch Hub guidance. Legacy Flower Girls and SexLab support is no longer official in SDA 4.4.
